CAPAC Outraged by President’s Veto of Bipartisan Children’s Health Insurance Bill

Washington, DC – Today, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) responds to the President’s veto of the Children’s Health Insurance bill.

Rep. Mike Honda (CA-15): “It is an outrage that the President vetoed this bipartisan compromise that would have provided health coverage for 10 million American children,” said Rep. Mike Honda, Chair of CAPAC. “We sent him a bill that costs $19 million a day to protect American children, and he vetoed it. In meantime, the President is burning through $720 million a day in Iraq. The President seems confused about the meaning of fiscal responsibility. The bill sent a strong message that in the richest nation in the world, children must be taken care of. Unfortunately the President does not see children as a priority. I will work with my colleagues to continue this fight for America’s children.”

Rep. Madeleine Bordallo (GU): “I am disappointed with the President’s veto and I hope that the House and Senate will vote to override the veto,” said Rep. Madeleine Bordallo, Chair of CAPAC’s Healthcare Task Force. “CAPAC worked very hard to include the needs of our Asian and Pacific Islander communities in the SCHIP bill, especially for the thousands of children in our communities who have no health care coverage. With the support of our leadership, we will continue to work to remove the disparities in health care between Asian and Pacific Islander Americans and our fellow citizens.”
