Washington, DC – Today members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) applaud the passage of H.R. 2669, the College Cost Reduction Act of 2007. This legislation provides the single largest investment in higher education since the GI bill at no new cost to taxpayers. Additionally, the bill creates a new designation of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Serving Institutions.
Rep. Michael Honda (CA-15): "Today’s passage of the bill is a momentous step in higher education for the Asian American and Pacific Islander community," said Rep. Honda, Chair of CAPAC. "This bill will boost financial aid to out nation’s students and the new designation for AAPI Higher Serving Institutions will provide quality resources to AAPI students such as culturally appropriate counseling services and mentoring programs. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate to push this important bill forward."
Rep. David Wu (OR-01): "For five years I have worked to see that colleges and universities across the country better assist low-income and underserved Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in their pursuit of a college education," said Rep. Wu, Chair of CAPAC’s Education Task Force. "Today, with the support of my colleagues in the U.S. House, I am one step closer to accomplishing that goal. I look forward to working with the Senate to see that this great country finally delivers equal education services to these AAPI students."
