California's 17th Congressional District is located in the heart of Silicon Valley. The unique and enterprising region draws residents from all around the globe. Many decades of immigration has transformed the ethnic make up of the region. Languages other than English are spoken in nearly half the households of the 17th District. Vast ripples of technological advancement have distinguished the area's vigorous economic history. The 17th District, once an agrarian super power, is now a leader in many robust technological fields.
The 17th Congressional District encompasses much of the central, and northern areas of Santa Clara County as well as the southern areas of Alameda County. This includes the cities of Cupertino, Fremont, Milpitas, Newark, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale and one third of San Jose.

With its rolling golden hills, urban marinas, hillside lakes, bustling town centers and mild Mediterranean climate, the 17th District has earned the reputation of being one of the best places to live in the United States. Santa Clara Valley's beauty, for example, earned the area the name "Valley of Heart's Delight." Similarly, Alameda County is characterized by its rich diversity and culture, standing as one of the most ethnically diverse regions of the Bay Area and indeed, the nation. Since World War II, the 17th District has seen a large development of the manufacturing and high tech industries.
The densely developed district is home to many prominent and successful high tech corporations, among them: Advanced Micro Devices (Sunnyvale), Apple Computer (Cupertino), Applied Materials (Santa Clara), Intel Corp (Santa Clara), eBay, and Yahoo (Sunnyvale).
